How Does Acetaminophen Work?
The acetaminophen in your TYLENOL gelcaps works by inhibiting chemical messengers called prostaglandins. Prostaglandins work by transmitting pains signals and fever signals. In response to injury or illness, your body produces prostaglandins to send messages to your brain that you are in pain. Acetaminophen is able to block the messages sent by prostaglandins to relieve pain and fever.
Prostaglandins also promote inflammation and swelling in many of your body's tissues, but acetaminophen does not inhibit these functions. This is why acetaminophen is not a medicine with anti-inflammatory effects.
